Indian River Volleyball Loses Close Match to Eastern Florida

The Pioneers take to the road again looking for their first conference win against east coast rival Eastern Florida State College, after getting a couple wins over some non-conference rivals on Saturday. However, Eastern enters the matchup with a positive record and recently coming out of a five set match with Daytona on the losing side.

The first set opened up going back and forth, looking like its going to be a highly contested matchup. Neither team was able to go get out to much of a lead either way. The Pioneers were able to build a lead of a few points and were able to maintain through most of the first game. Through the first set the Pioneers also served very aggressive and took Eastern out of system on the majority of points. This proved to be very effective and IRSC was able to take the first match 25-19

The second set was even more highly contested with several ties and lead changes in the early stages of the set. Back and forth the momentum and lead would go until the score was all tied at 18, and Eastern was able to string a few points together thanks to some untimely IRSC errors. Eastern would take the second set and tie up the match at 1-1.

Third set started out looking like a blowout, with the Pioneers jumping out to a 10-3 lead behind the 19 kills from Greta Klotz. That was not how the story would go however, as the Pioneers had a lapse of focus and all of a sudden the lead had vanished and Eastern jumped out to a lead. The momentum had gone and the panic set in, as the Pioneers serve receive began to fall apart, as did their chances at a set victory. They dropped the third set 18-25.

The fourth set was not the bounce back that IRSC needed as they dug a hole early, continuing to struggle with their serve receive. Even with some solid defensive efforts from Emma McWilliam (15 digs) and Taylor Flint (12 digs), the Pioneers could not hold off the outside hitters from Eastern, and eventually they would take the 4^th set 25-14.

The Pioneers take to the road this weekend to take on #1 in the nation Florida SouthWestern, Saturday at 2pm.
