Indian River Volleyball Drops Conference Opener

Indian River Volleyball Drops Conference Opener

The Pioneers look to defend their home court in the conference opener against the Falcons of Daytona State College. Daytona enters the match ranked in the top 20 in the nation, so the Pioneers know they are going to have their hands full bringing home a W with this matchup.

The early stages of the match did not spell well for Indian River State College as they struggled to score early and looked a little hesitant on the court. They dropped behind by 5 points early and struggled to make up the ground through the first set. However, as the first set neared the finish, the River was able to rally behind some big kills from sophomore right side, Re'na Ashley and make one final push, tying the game up at 22. Unfortunately, the Falcons aggressive serving got them the win in the end, 25-23.

The next set the Pioneers took control and came out with a new energy, leading through out the entire game. Daytona hung around though and were able to chip the lead away until they eventually caught up at 23-23. The Pioneers would not waiver, and stayed strong to claim the second set 27-25.

The next two sets were a lot of back and forth as the match was very well contested. Indian River was the first two 15 points in both sets 3 and 4, sadly they were unable to close the sets as efficiently, and Daytona was able to finish out the win in 4. The scores of the last two sets were 19-25 and 20-25.

The Pioneers were led by Greta Klotz (15 Kills, 7 Digs) and Re'na Ashley (13 kills, 8 blocks) combining for 32 earned points.

The River takes to the road and plays Hillsborough CC this Thursday, looking for their first conference win.
