Volleyball Earns Two Conference Wins

Volleyball Earns Two Conference Wins
The Indian River Volleyball Team was charged with protecting their house this week,
finishing out the first round of conference play with two home games. The first challenger was
Palm Beach State on Tuesday evening, this was their first meeting of the season. The Pioneers
came out firing taking the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21. It wouldn't be an easy finish however,
as PBSC fought hard to take it to a 4th set after squeezing out a 25-23 set victory. Tensions
rose in the 4th set as the two teams went back and forth all set into extra points. After fighting
off multiple set point opportunities for Palm Beach, the Pioneers were able to clench a 30-28 win
thanks to the final ace serve of Re'na Ashley. Top performers for Indian River include Jayhlen
Thomas (9 kills, 6 blocks), Mallory Rooney (9 kills, 10 digs), Jasmine Sayre (15 digs), and Jillian
Bemis (22 assists).

The second challenger for the week was Eastern Florida State College, and the River
was looking for payback after losing their first meeting in four sets. Things looked to be going
the wrong way early, with EFSC jumping out to an early 10-2 lead in the first set. That was the
last time that River didn't look in control of this match. The Pioneers stormed back to take the
first set 25-22, bolstered by the defense and serving of Sophomores Jasmine Sayre (13 digs, 4
aces) and Gabriela Fialova (11 digs, 1 ace). The River didn't look back, winning both the second
and third sets of the match handily, 25-16 and 25-19. Top performers for the match included
Mallory Rooney (10 kills, 7 digs) , Izabella Rae (12 assists, 6 digs), and Tessa Raadsheer (9
kills).

This marked the first 3-set win of the year for the River, and brings them to 1-1 with
EFSC on the year, 4-3 overall record for the season. The River Volleyball Team travels for a
Tri-Match against Hillsborough and Sante Fe on Friday.
