Women’s Basketball Finishes the Month of December Undefeated.

FORT PIERCE, FL - Indian River Womens Basketball hosted The New Year's Classic December 29th and 30th, 2023. The Pioneer's first matchup was Friday night against DME Academy. The Pioneers continued their hot start of the season to earn their ninth win with a final score of 79-68.

To start the first quarter, Indian River jumped out to a 15 – 0 run, getting defensive stops every possession keeping the score a shut out for the first nine minutes. In the second quarter, DME settled in offensively, outscoring the Pioneers 19-15, cutting the deficit to only four points going into halftime.

In the second half, Indian River outscored DME 49 – 46. Sophomore point guard Jasmine Peaks had a huge second half for the Pioneers. She scored 12 of her 20 points for the night during that time. Jordan Boddie, a freshman guard, scored 13 points in the second half totaling 18 points for the night. All while sophomore guard Jamya Robinson made her presence known in the paint. She tallied her second double-double of the season with 12 points and ten rebounds.

On Saturday, in the second matchup for The River in The New Years Classic, Indian River hosted Bishop State. This is the second meeting between these two teams this season, with the first in November. The Pioneers and the Bobcats met at a neutral site at Pensacola State that resulted in a Pioneer win, 74-67.

This time the Pioneers are at home and in the first six minutes, both teams would exchange baskets until the Bobcats started to widen the spread and take a six-point lead. However, the Bobcat's lead did not last long as the Pioneers forced two turnovers, which resulted in scoring opportunities for Kailyn Peters and Jordan Boddie.

In the second quarter, the Pioneer's defensive efforts were on full display as they forced the Bobcats to seven of their 19 turnovers. The River took advantage of those extra possessions, outscoring Bishop State 13 – 10 and taking a one-point lead into halftime.

The Pioneers continued to defend at a high level in the second half. They were able to hold Bishop State to eight points in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth. At the final horn, Indian River notched their eighth straight win, with a final score of 57 – 52.

"We knew coming into the game tonight we would face adversity. I am proud of how we responded and executed the game plan; this was a big win for us" Head Coach Jamarra Robinson noted.

Jordan Boddie led the Pioneers in scoring, contributing 21 points and three rebounds. Dyanna Maxey added 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Kailyn Peters scored nine points, five rebounds, and four assists.

The Pioneers have not lost at home the entire 2023 calendar year all while closing out the month of December undefeated, with an overall record of 10-3.
