Women’s Basketball Defeats HCC at Home

FORT PIERCE, FL - Indian River Women's Basketball hosted Hillsborough Community College in a Citrus Conference Showdown. Coach Robinson mentioned "Every time we play HCC it's going to be a fight to the end." Monday night game was that and more, as the Hawks gritty defensive play forced several turnovers for the Pioneers.  

In the first quarter, the Pioneers came out ready to complete taking a 17 – 10 lead. Kailyn Peters came off the bench and made an immediate impact scoring 7 of her 15 points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Pioneers took a 10-point lead early but was quickly shorten due to the Hawks defensive efforts.

Despite their efforts Indian River would go on to earn their second Citrus conference win defeating HCC 73-61.  "Playing teams like HCC will always be a challenge due to their style of play. I am proud of our group because we never lost the lead once gaining it in the first quarter. We answered every run HCC went on and that shows our growth and togetherness" Coach Robinson noted.

In the second half, the Pioneers lead grew to as many as 16 points with 5 minutes left in the fourth. Indian River was clicking on all cylinders, shooting an impressive 50% from the field and 41% from the 3pt line. Hillsborough made a late run with 3 minutes remaining on the clock however it was not enough to overcome the Pioneers led.

Four players were in double digits for the Pioneers, Jasmine Peaks led all scorers with 17 points and three rebounds. Kailyn Peters continues her hot scoring tallying 15 points, shooting an impressive 66% from the field. Peters also added 7 rebounds, Jordan Boddie contributed 14 points and three rebounds. Jamya Robinson was three rebounds shy of earning her first double double scoring 10 points and 7 rebounds.

With the win, the Pioneers are 6 -3 on the season and 2 – 0 in Citrus Conference play. Their next game is on the road in Fort Myers against Florida Southwestern on Wednesday, December 13.
