Women’s Basketball knocks off Top Ten ranked Santa Fe

Thursday evening in Fort Pierce, FL Indian River State College Women's Basketball team defeated Santa Fe College 69 – 66. In a highly competitive matchup, with multiple lead changes the River survived a couple late runs to earn their first win of the season.

After back and forth action during the first half, the River return from halftime clicking on all cylinders taking a 16 point lead. Due to careless turnovers by IRSC, the Saints fought back hard to go into the fourth down by 8. Coach Robinson mentioned "at times our youth was displayed and we didn't take care of the ball like we should have, which caused for Santa Fe to capitalize on our mistakes. We're thankful we was able to hold on and defeat a Top Ten ranked program."

Sophomore Center Chakoi Mitchell had a monster game in the paint scoring 16 points, shooting an impressive 7 for 12 from the field. Akiyonna Joiner added 9 points, four rebounds and four steals for the River. Freshmen forward Aniyah Jenkins was key for the River off the bench scoring 9 points.

Defensively the River cause major problems for the Saints creating an impressive 37 turnovers. "Our defensive pressure is what gets us going, we want to dictate and defend at a high level for 40 minutes" Coach Robinson noted.

Indian River State College will be back in action Saturday at Eastern Florida State College to take on Top 6th ranked Tallahassee Community College in the Florida Juco Shootout.
