Pioneer women bring season to a close

Pioneer women bring season to a close

The Miami Dade Sharks were honoring their sophomores in their last home game of the season and their enthusiasm filtered into the start of the game. The Pioneers unable to convert shots and poor defensive efforts ignited the Sharks to take a commanding 12-0 start before the River was able to counter back. The first quarter was filled with twelve unforced turnovers by IRSC that resulted in Miami Dade transitioning their way to a 19-6 first quarter thrashing. Second quarter the Pioneers fought to level the playing field as they begun to hit their shots and hustle a bit more on the defensive end. IRSC found themselves dead even with the Sharks 14-14 for their second quarter efforts. However, the first quarter deficit held on until halftime as the Pioneers were down 33-20.

The second half the Pioneers limited their turnovers only committing 2, giving themselves a better offensive opportunity to fight back. Keeping with the same pace of the third quarter action the River stayed consisted on the boards and had better shot selections to stay within reach of the Sharks. Unfortunately with a 19-13 third quarter score, it only widened the gap for the Pioneers to recover as the score moved to 52-33.  Fourth quarter gave IRSC a bit of a boost as the a couple 3 point shots connected, but again turnovers became a factor and limited more offensive opportunities to convert. Sharing the floor for the last time in the final minutes of the game were two year returners Celia DeVoss, Elaine Field, Keona Cadore, Yairaliz Hernandez and Annette Dukes. As the horn sounded on the finishing of their IRSC college careers, the Pioneers of Indian River ended their season with a 73-45 loss. IRSC finished with a season record of 5-22 and 3-9 in conference for a 6th place finish in the Region 8 Southern Conference.

Annette Dukes led the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points, 7 rebounds. Freshman Soriah Sidaui contributed 11 points and Elaine Field 7 points, 7 rebounds while Keona Cadore had 6 and Stephasia Doctor rounded it out with 4.
