Action packed evening includes win for IRSC women

Each year the Indian River State College women's basketball team hosts the "Paint the River Pink" game in February to support the fight against breast cancer. This year the event fell on the last home game of the season for the Pioneers which included the recognizing of the sophomores and their families.  The evening was packed full of activities which included a decisive win over ASA-Miami in their second meeting in conference play.

The Pioneers took an early 16-10 lead in the first quarter but the start was rocky as ASA- Miami came out attacking first. Unable to find their offensive rhythm the Pioneers pace slowed down to almost a halt before heading into the locker room with a low scoring lead of 29-17.

ASA-Miami took the floor with an aggressive offensive mentality and made the Pioneers work to stay in the game. The Silver Streaks came within one of the Pioneers at the end of the third quarter 14-13, despite only having four players on the floor due to foul trouble. The stunned IRSC team took some time to adjust and worked to keep their lead. The fourth quarter found ASA-Miami with more player issues as they were down to three players in the game due to fouls. The Pioneers uncertain on how to adjust, struggled to execute offensively but their early scoring allowed them to pull off a solid win over ASA-Miami 55-35.

The Pioneers were led in scoring by sophomore Elaine Field with 12 points and freshman Miracle Simon with 10. The Pioneers move to 3-5 in conference play and 5-18 for the season. They will travel to Florida Southwestern in Fort Myers Saturday for a 2:00pm start.
