Field’s career high not enough to pull off a win

Field’s career high not enough to pull off a win

The Pioneer women's basketball team traveled to Fort Myers to face conference foe Florida Southwestern in their second match up of the season. FSW took a quick lead in the opening minutes to catch IRSC off guard and to take control as they pulled away with a 11-16 lead in the opening quarter of play. Indian River balanced out their play but a series of defensive errors and other factors allowed FSW to retain the lead going into the locker room with a score of 30-20.

The opening minutes of the second half found freshman Soriah Sidaui aggressively attacking the basket to spark the offensively play of the Pioneers. Unable to stop her, Sidaui spent some time at the free-throw line connecting four for four to help narrow the gap to 39-30 in just first five minutes. IRSC then made a series of defensive mistakes that allowed FSW to score effortlessly near the rim. By the end of the third quarter FSW had taken a 53-35 lead on the Pioneers. Fourth quarter action found sophomore Elaine Field leading the Pioneers  in a charge to regain the lead as she hit a three point shot in the opening seconds. Field then went on to score an additional 7 points as IRSC outscored FSW 14-10 in the final quarter. Unfortunately the late efforts of the Pioneers was not enough as FSW  sealed the win with a score of 49-64.

Elaine Field scored her IRSC career high of 23 points and six rebounds, while freshman Soriah Sidaui contributed an impactful 9 points, Keona Cadore had 8 and Miracle Simon 7.

The Pioneers move to 3-6 in conference play and 5-19 for the overall season. They will have a bye this week and will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Broward for a 2:00 tip-off.
