Indian River Splits Doubleheader at Polk State

WINTER HAVEN, FL - Indian River traveled to Polk State for a doubleheader and finished the night 1-1. J'dah Girigorie was the star of the show, leading Indian River to a commanding 10-2 victory over the Polk State Eagles on Tuesday, February 25. The starting pitcher showcased her dominance on the mound, striking out an impressive 11 batters while allowing only five hits and one run over six innings—all without issuing a single walk.

The game kicked off with Indian River taking an early lead in the first inning when Presley Smith delivered a clutch single that brought in the first run. As the game progressed, Indian River extended its lead in the top of the fourth inning, capitalizing on an error that allowed another run to score, pushing the score to 2-1 in favor of The River.

Offensively, Indian River was relentless, racking up a total of 12 hits throughout the game. Standout performances came from Sarah Phipps, Taylor Cochran, and Smith, who each contributed two hits. Additionally, Nyasia Williams, Kassidy Pontbriant, Cochran, and Smith each drove in two runs, showcasing a well-rounded offensive effort. The team also displayed their speed on the bases, successfully stealing six bases during the game, further solidifying their dominance over the Eagles.

In a tough matchup during the second game, Indian River fell to the Polk State Eagles despite out-hitting them 7-4, with a final score of 3-1. Anaise Piar and Sophia Loreto were bright spots for Indian River, each collecting two hits during the game. The Pioneers managed to get on the scoreboard in the second inning when Tessa Anderson's fielder's choice allowed Taylor Cochran to reach base while also bringing in a run. However, that would be the only run The River could muster against a resilient Eagles defense.

Hanna Deschambault took the mound for Indian River, pitching five and one-third innings. She allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out one and issuing no walks. Cochran led the team with one run batted in, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Eagles' scoring.

Indian River plays its 2025 home opener on Thursday, February 27 taking on Hillsborough Community College at 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
