Two Grand Slams Propel IRSC Over Seminole State

SEMINOLE, FL - Cambrie Todd drove in five runs on three hits to lead Pioneers past Seminole State College 12-3 in game one on Master's Sunday. Todd hit a grand slam to center field in the third inning, scoring four runs, then singled in the fifth inning, scoring one. Zoe Thornsbury added a second grand slam for the River in the fifth, part of a six run inning. Indian River amassed 13 hits in the game with Maddox Thomas and Cassidy Patterson each collecting multiple hits on top of Todd and Thornsbury's contribution. The Pioneers also collected five stolen bases for the game and were sure-handed on defense, committing no errors. J'dah Girigorie earned the win in the circle, striking out four and walking none. Emma Solis appeared in relief to close out the game.

Game two saw more offensive firepower with Indian River scoring early to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Seminole State however answered right back with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the same inning. Pioneers chipped away again and took the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits to take an 8-6 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a clutch double on two outs by Mackenzie Wolfe, after a seven-pitch at-bat, which drove in three. The freshman catcher was 2-4 in the game while Adrianna Portanova and Todd also had strong games at the plate, each collecting three hits. In the back and forth affair, Seminole State went on top again in the bottom of the sixth on a two run home run which would wind up being the game winner for the Raiders. The 9-8 loss was the first setback in the last 14 games for Indian River. Impressive still in defeat, the Pioneers tallied 13 hits in the game and stole another four bases.

The River travels again on Tuesday, April 16, to face Polk State in another Citrus Conference double header at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
