Indian River Gets The Sweep In Dramatic Walk Off Fashion

Indian River Gets The Sweep In Dramatic Walk Off Fashion

FORT PIERCE, FL -  Saturday afternoon the Pioneers hosted a Citrus Conference double header against St. Petersburg College (SPC). The Pioneers opened the scoring in the first inning of game one on a Presley Smith two run double off the left center field fence. The Pioneers collected a total of eight hits en route to the final 5-1 victory. J'dah Girigorie pitched four and a third innings earning the win in the circle. The freshman gave up zero runs on just two hits, striking out eight and walking none. Smith finished the game 3-for-4 and Cassidy Patterson went 2-for-3 and a walk. The offense collectively tallied six base on balls and added four stolen bases.

Game two turned into a thrilling come from behind win for the Pioneers. Since falling behind 2-0 in the top of the third, Indian River State College wasn't able to generate much throughout the game. The team had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the 6th but left two runners stranded at second and third. Heading into the bottom of the 7th with the seven, eight and nine hitters due up, Coach Dale Atkinson turned to the bench. After a fly out to start the inning, and the team down to it's final two outs, Freshman Bayli Legg doubled to right field. Freshman Nyasia Williams drew a walk to get back to the top of the order. Cassidy Patterson executed a beautiful bunt up the first base line to load the bases. Adrianna Portanova, who had the team's only hit leading up to the 7th , stepped up to the plate. Portanova wasted no time and laced a scorching line drive deep into left center field, easily burning the outfield defense. The game winning triple scored all three baserunners to complete the walk-off victory for Indian River.

Solid pitching throughout was a collective effort from sophomores Emma Solis, Mackenzie Masternak who got the save, along with Girigorie who tallied the win. The trio combined for seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Indian River is scheduled next against Macomb Community College on Wednesday, March 6 at home. First pitches of the double header are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
