Softball Finishes 5-0 in the JUCO Kickoff Classic

CLEARWATER, FL- IRSC softball finished the JUCO Kickoff Classic with 3 more wins on Saturday, closing the weekend 5-0. The first game of the day got off to a shaky start with the team falling behind early with a score of 4-1. The Pioneers flipped the script in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on five hits to take a 7-4 lead. A two-run single by Adrianna Portanova sparked the inning and a comeback 7-6 victory over Tallahassee. Freshman Ciara Gendron earned the win on the mound, giving up five hits and one earned run over five innings, striking out four and walking none.

Game 2 started with a bang as the Pioneers scored 11 runs in the first inning and concluded with a 16-0 shutout win against South Carolina Union. IRSC collected a total of 17 hits and added nine stolen bases. Freshman J'dah Girigorie earned the win for the Pioneers. 

The Pioneers concluded the day with a win to defeat #4 (DII) Parkland Community (IL). Sophomore catcher Maddox Thomas smashed a three-run HR that helped seal the 5-2 victory. Sophomore Cambrie Todd led the Pioneers with three hits in four at-bats and Girigorie earned her third win of the weekend, pitching five and one third shutout innings, while striking out 11 and walking none.

Indian River plays next (home opener) vs South Florida State on Friday, February 9th (4pm and 6pm).
