IRSC Softball Competes at Juco Kickoff Classic

Indian River finishes strong at the JUCO Kickoff Classic in Clearwater with 2 back to back victories on Sunday.

A close early morning contest against St. Pete was decided on Daija Torchia's inside the park home run, lifting The Pioneers to a 3-2 extra inning victory. Alina Varga pitched a complete game including 12 strikeouts. The finale saw the IR bats wake up in a decisive 10-1 win over Georgia Highlands. Elle Thomas and Kendal Bryant each went 3-3 and an RBI in the impressive offensive performance by The Pioneers. Dominique Prevette (4 innings) earned the victory in the circle and along with Mackenzie Masternak (2 innings) combined for 10 K's. Indian River got off to a slow start on Friday falling to both Northwest Florida State (12-6) and to Santa Fe (8-4) but rebounded on Saturday with 2 early wins against Georgia Military (12-5) and East Georgia State (8-0). The nightcap on Saturday was easily the most exciting game of the entire tournament, versus Central Florida. The back and forth battle was controversial, extremely competitive and entertaining. The Pioneers fell just short 10-9 in extras (9). On the weekend Indian River posted a team .398 BA and the pitching staff combined for 52 strikeouts.
