20th Win For IRSC

20th Win For IRSC

Hialeah, Florida – The Indian River State College (IRSC) Men's Basketball Team won their 20th game on Saturday as they defeated ASA College Miami by a score of 90-85.  This was the third season in a row in which the Pioneers have won 20 games and qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Region VIII Basketball Tournament.  The tournament this year will have a change in venue from Central Florida College in Ocala, to the campus of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville.

Recording their 20th win was not an easy task for IRSC as the game saw several lead changes and the score remained close throughout the contest.  The Pioneers took a slight five-point lead when Linton Brown connected on a three-point shot making the score 25-20, but ASA went on an 8-0 run and took back the lead, 28-25.  IRSC went to the locker-room at halftime with a slim lead, 36-34.

Miles Coleman did his best to keep IRSC in the contest by scoring 12 straight points as the score was 54-51.  ASA kept the game close, but was never able to regain the lead.  Drew LaMont grabbed his own missed shot and was fouled on the stick-back lay-up.  He converted the "old fashioned" three-point play giving IRSC their first ten-point lead of the game, 74-64.  ASA quickly erased the lead, but Antrell Charlton stole the ball from ASA and hit fast-breaking A.J. Cajuste who converted the lay-up and was fouled.  He made the free-throw and the lead was back to seven, 83-76.  ASA was forced to foul and the Pioneers were able to make enough free-throws to preserve the win, 90-85.

Scoring for IRSC were LaMont and DeJuan Lockett 18, Coleman 16, Tanahj Pettway 15, and Cajuste added 11 points. The win moved the Pioneers record to 20-7 and 9-1 in the Southern Conference.  They will take on Broward College on Wednesday, February 19th at 7:30 p.m. at Fort Pierce campus of IRSC.  This will be the last home game of the season and Sophomore Night, where each sophomore on the team will be recognized for their contribution to the program.
