Tenth Win In A Row For The Pioneers

Tenth Win In A Row For The Pioneers

Fort Pierce, Florida – The Pioneers captured their tenth win in a row Wednesday evening when they defeated Broward College, 100-95.  "I couldn't be prouder of our players, they just kept battling and refused to give up," stated Indian River State College (IRSC) Men's Basketball Head Coach Charlie Wilson.  It was definitely a hard-fought contest with Broward holding the lead through a large portion of the game.

IRSC's guard, Tanahj Pettway, hit four three-point baskets in the early stages, keeping the Broward lead to three, 23-20. The Pioneers tied the score at 25 when Tadre Morse converted two free-throws.  Miles Coleman increased the score to 40-33 on a driving lay-up with just over eight minutes to play in the first half.  Turnovers and missed shots allowed Broward to take a one-point lead into the half, 52-51.

The score remained close, until Broward built up a 14-point advantage with 8:10 left in the game, 84-70.  At that point, things did not look good for IRSC, but the momentum was getting ready to swing the other direction. Solid defense and excellent ball movement on the offensive end of the floor allowed the Pioneers to claw their way back into the contest.  DeJuan Lockett converted the old-fashioned three-point play when Coleman found him streaking down the floor for a lay-up, giving IRSC the lead, 87-86 with just under five minutes remaining.  Two defensive stops, a layup by A.J. Cajuste, and a jumper by Coleman, increase the lead to four points, forcing Broward to foul.  The Pioneers were able to convert enough free throws to seal the 100-95 win.

Cajuste scored a career high 24 points, followed by Pettway 23, Coleman 18, Lockett 14, and Antrell Charlton tossed in 11 for IRSC.  The win moved their record to 14-6 and 3-0 in Southern Conference play.  They will be in action on Saturday, January 18 when they travel to Miami Dade College for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
