Pioneers Win Conference Opener

Fort Pierce, Florida – "It's always good to start off conference play with a win", stated Indian River State College (IRSC) Men's Basketball Head Coach Charlie Wilson, as they defeated Palm Beach State College, 102-68.  The Pioneers have been very competitive in the tough Southern Conference, finishing first in 2018 and second in 2019, and are hoping for another successful run this season.

IRSC took charge early in the game building a 13-2 advantage when Drew LaMont connected for three making the score 13-2.  Palm Beach answered with their own run and cut the margin to 6 points, 36-30 with just under two minutes remaining in the half.  Jai Clark hit a three-point basket just before the first half buzzer, sending the Pioneers into the locker-room with a 41-32 lead.

IRSC started the second half on a 13-0 run, capped off by back to back slam dunks by Miles Coleman, pushing the score to 52-32.  Palm Beach cut into the lead, but could contain the three-pointing shooting of the Pioneers as they went 18-34 from three-point range for 52.9%.  The win increased IRSC's record to 12-6 and 1-0 in conference play.

Scoring for IRSC were Coleman 25, Clark 21 (7-10 3-pt), Linton Brown 18, A.J. Cajuste 13, and LaMont tossed in 10 points.  The team will be back in action when the Hialeah, Florida to take on ASA College (Miami), at the Bucky Dent Recreational Center for a 4 p.m. start.
