Nunez signs with FIU

Indian River State College (IRSC) sophomore Willy Nunez, Jr. signed a national letter of intent with NCAA Division I Florida International University (FIU) located in Miami, Florida, for the 2017-18 season.

"It's been a long journey, but all the hard work has paid off, and I am proud to say that I am a FIU signee," declared Nunez.  FIU is a member of Conference USA, and they are coached by Anthony Evans who will begin his fifth season as head coach.  "I am excited for and proud of Willy," expressed Head Coach Charlie Wilson.  "Willy came in here to Indian River and really worked hard on his game.  He embraced the process and spent a lot of hours working extremely hard in the gym.  He consistently played at a high level throughout the entire season and I think really says a lot about him."

Nunez, a 6'6" shooting guard from Orlando, Florida, averaged 20.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and shot 84.9% from the free-throw line during the 2016-17 season.  He scored 895 total points and made 187 three-point baskets while helping lead IRSC to 34 overall wins and 16 conference wins in two seasons.  Nunez developed into one of the most prolific scorers in the state of Florida with unlimited three-point range.  He was selected to the Region 8 All-State Team and was also a Florida Southern Conference First Team Selection for the 2016-17 season.  He was an honorable mention all-conference selection for the 2015-16 season.

"Willy was a part of our first recruiting class here at Indian River and is a major reason for what we have accomplished on and off the court," Coach Wilson continued.  "FIU is getting a great basketball player, but more importantly a tremendous young man who I could not be more proud of."

Nunez gave credit to Head Coach Charlie Wilson for his development by stating, "Coach Wilson played a big role in my decision, and I wouldn't know where I would be right now without him.  He gave me opportunity after opportunity when I didn't always deserve it.  Coach not only developed me as a basketball player but also as a young man."
