WINTER HAVEN, FL - Indian River took both games on Saturday against Polk State College, completing the sweep with a 3-1 win in game one and a 9-6 victory in game two. This marks the fourth time this season that Indian River has swept a Citrus Conference opponent. The River improves to 27-8 overall and 17-4 in Citrus Conference play, sitting atop the conference standings.
Freshman Shane Lavin earned his second complete game of the year as The River secured a 3-1 win in game one. Lavin went the distance, throwing seven innings while striking out three and allowing just three baserunners the entire game. Indian River got on the board in the top of the fifth to break a scoreless tie when Jacob Souza doubled to left field, scoring Brett Patten. Maikol Lucena followed with a single to drive in another run. The River tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-1.
Indian River tallied ten hits in the game. Nico Lopez and Maikol Lucena each collected multiple hits.
Maikol Lucena had a standout performance, collecting four hits in five at-bats as Indian River defeated Polk 9-6 in game two. The River struck first in the top of the first inning after Lucena singled to score one run, followed by a Jake Weatherspoon double that brought in two more runs. A double by Matty Davis extended Indian River's lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning. Polk responded by tying the game in the bottom of the third and then taking the lead 5-4 in the fourth. However, Indian River bounced back with a three-run inning to reclaim the lead. The River added insurance runs in the seventh and ninth innings to secure the win.
Andris Barroso earned his fourth win of the season, throwing five innings in relief. The right-hander allowed only three hits and one run while striking out four. Sammy Beir closed out the game, pitching two innings to earn his first save of the year. Indian River tallied fourteen hits in the game. Jake Weatherspoon drove in a team-high three runs. Brett Patten, Scout Simpson, and Matty Davis each recorded multiple hits.
The River will be back on the road Thursday, April 3 as they take on State College of Florida in Bradenton.
