Indian River Takes Two at the Early Bird Classic

AUBURNDALE, FL- The nationally ranked #22 Pioneers won two games in the Early Bird Classic this past weekend, defeating Santa Fe College and Polk State College. Picking up where they left off on Friday, January 24, the River allowed only two earned runs across both games while collecting 15 hits.

In game one, the Pioneers secured a dramatic 2-1 walk-off victory over Santa Fe in eight innings. The game was tied at one in the bottom of the eighth when sophomore Jason Lashley delivered a clutch single to score the game-winning run. Lucas Glendinning made his season debut on the mound, allowing just four hits over five innings while striking out four. The bullpen continued the dominance, with sophomores Justin Minaberry and Sammy Beir combining for three scoreless innings and four strikeouts in relief. Beir earned the win.

Defensively, Jake Weatherspoon was outstanding behind the plate, catching three Santa Fe runners attempting to steal. Offensively, the top of the lineup delivered, with Brett Patten and Matt Lashley each recording two hits. Weatherspoon and Jason Lashley also drove in one run apiece.

In game two, the Pioneers defeated the Eagles 4-2. After Polk scored in the first inning, Weatherspoon continued his stellar weekend by driving in the tying run in the bottom half. Maikol Lucena added power to the lineup, leading the team with two RBIs, while freshman Sean Duffin recorded his first career multi-hit game.

Shane Lavin made his first career start, allowing one run over three innings to earn the win. Transfer Jonathan Wolaver followed with two scoreless innings, and Brian Ehrlich closed it out to earn his first save of the season. The Pioneers played error-free baseball, showcasing their sharpness on defense.

The Pioneers return to action this Tuesday, January 28, for their home opener at Mike Easom Field to face Keiser JV.
