Pioneers Sweep St. Petersburg

FORT PIERCE, FL - Indian River completes the sweep of St. Petersburg College (SPC) Saturday by winning both games 6-0 and 4-1. The Pioneers have won eight games in a row now improving to 21-7 overall and 11-4 in Citrus Conference play. Pioneers now sit atop of the Citrus Conference standings tied for 1st place with Florida Southwestern.

In game one Indian River won big over SPC 6-0. CJ Hanson earned the win for the Pioneers which is his fourth on the year. Hanson threw his first complete game of the year going seven innings only allowing three hits and striking out six. Freshman Jacob Weatherspoon got the Pioneers on the board early in the second inning with an RBI double. Pioneers extended their lead with two more runs in the sixth inning followed by a Matthew Rubin solo homerun, his sixth of the year.

Game two for the Pioneers Cade Drohan took to the mound for his seventh start of the year. The redshirt sophomore gave up two hits striking out five over seven innings of work. Freshmen Cris Knier earned the win for the Pioneers striking out every batter he faced in two innings of work. Matthew Rubin singled and scored a run to get the offensive going but after St. Pete scored a run to tie things up freshman Brett Patten hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth to break the game open for Indian River.  Final score for game two was 4-1 Indian River.

The Pioneers look to continue their win streak Tuesday night as they host Eastern Florida State at home for a non-conference action.
