Comeback Effort Falls Short

FORT MYERS, FL - Indian River State Pioneers fell to Florida Southwestern 13-12 on Thursday in extra innings. Indian River was down 8-0 going into the fourth inning when the comeback started for the Pioneers. Danny Baez, sophomore from Oviedo, FL, got things going with his first homerun of the year then Diego Alana doubled later scoring two runs making it 8-3. Pioneers took the lead in the top of the seventh inning 12-11 but after a solo homerun hit by FSW in the bottom of the ninth the Pioneers couldn't get another run across losing in the twelfth inning.

The Pioneers collected 18 hits in the game. Brett Patten led Indian River with four hits from the leadoff spot. Alana and Matt Rubin were tough to handle all game both driving in three runs. Baez, Aj Hunerberg, Jassiel Valbuena, and Jacob Weatherspoon each collected multiple hits for the Indian River.  Angelo Smith got the nod for the Pioneers going two and two-thirds of an inning followed by freshman Lucas Glendinning and Justin Minaberry. Chris Knier gave the Pioneers some length going four and two thirds of an inning striking out seven.

The Pioneers look to bounce back as they host FSW at home for a double header Saturday, February 24 .
