Pioneers pick up win in extra innings

Friday saw one of the more interesting victories thus far in Indian Rivers season.

The Pioneers took on Broward College on the same field in which they saw starting first baseman Kohl Gilmore sent to the emergency room in their prior meeting and the luck seemed eerily similar on this day.

In the 5th inning of a close ball game, the Pioneers lost catcher Dan Oberst to a knee injury and then outfielder Blake Ebo just one inning later. The Pioneers now found themselves even more short handed as they were already missing Ed McKenna from the start who is nursing an ankle injury that was suffered earlier in the week. With all the injuries, Indian River was faced with the daunting task of winning a conference game with three pitchers in the batting order.

Against the odds the Pioneers kept fighting, forcing extra innings and eventually earning the win in the 11th inning 4-3. The pitching was stellar as they allowed zero earned runs in the 11 innings of work. This aided the Poneers in making a come from behind win even possible.

Eight of those innings were turned in by Andres Fernandez out of the bullpen on his way to earning the victory along with his unlikely 1st career at bat. Kohl Gilmore also reached base safely on four occasions in his return to the place in which he was knocked out of the game in the first inning just three weeks prior.
