Beyond the Field of Play: IRSC Athletics Shines Academically.

The end of the Fall 2023 term has come and gone with the inevitable posting of grades to transcripts. At Indian River, this is no time to fret! The focus has never been about simply winning games, the goal at IRSC is to win championships and get degrees. One without the other is not acceptable. Fall 2023 has proven once again that Athletic Departments can do both if there is buy-in to the mission.

THE RIVER Athletic Department, comprised of 140 athletes, posted the highest grade-point-average in recent history with an overall department average of 3.29. Leading the way was the Volleyball team with a 3.69 GPA, the highest in the history of the program since becoming an intercollegiate athletic sport at IRSC. The team had six of their fifteen players achieve perfect grade reports of 4.00. In addition to the volleyball team, another twelve athletes achieve straight A's during the term, bringing the total to eighteen athletes achieving perfect 4.00 GPAs. Again, this is the largest number in the history of the department to achieve this status.

On the team front, six of the seven sports teams achieved overall team GPAs higher than 3.00. The Men's Basketball team, currently ranked in the NJCAA National Polls at #21, achieved their highest GPA in team history with a 3.33 team mark. Dale Atkinson's softball program's 3.49 was the highest team mark in his 25 -year career and baseball's 3.22 is the highest in Coach Frank Torre's tenure as the Head Coach.

Teams will now enjoy a few days off and turn their focus to Conference, State and National titles during Spring 2024 while continuing to excel in the classroom on the way to being named NJCAA Academic All-Americans as both individuals and teams.
