The River Battles to the Wire in Five-Set State Tournament Thriller
FORT PIERCE, FL — The Indian River State College volleyball team put forth an inspiring performance in the opening round of the FCSAA Division II Volleyball Championship, hosted on their home court. Despite an exceptional effort and moments of brilliance throughout the match, The River fell just short against the #3-seeded Pensacola State College in a thrilling five-set battle: 21–25, 25–20, 25–22, 14–25, 12–15.
The River entered the tournament as the #6 seed and immediately set the tone with their determination and energy, feeding off an electric home crowd that packed the gym from start to finish. After a competitive first set that narrowly went to Pensacola, Indian River stormed back to claim the second and third sets with disciplined defense, strong serving, and well-executed offensive plays. The team's poise and fight were on full display as they controlled the tempo and momentum midway through the match.
However, Pensacola responded in the fourth set to even the match, forcing a decisive fifth. In the final frame, both teams traded points in a tense back-and-forth rally that showcased grit and composure on both sides. Despite several clutch plays from the River, Pensacola managed to close out the match in a narrow 15–12 finish.
Although the result didn't fall in their favor, the River's performance reflected the growth, resilience, and competitive spirit that defined their season. Competing in front of their home fans in the state tournament for the first time at the Division II level made the moment even more special, and the crowd's energy underscored the strong support for River Athletics.
With the loss, Indian River concluded the 2025 season ranked sixth out of eleven teams in the region — a testament to their consistency and improvement throughout the year. As the program looks ahead, there is great optimism for the future, with returning players and new recruits ready to build upon the standard set this season.
