Pioneers Overcome Adversity to Defeat HCC

Wednesday evening in Tampa, FL Indian River State College traveled to Hillsborough Community College in a southern conference matchup. The Pioneers are currently undefeated when facing HCC, holding a 6 – 0 led, the Hawks was determined to change that after going back and forth the entire night cutting IRSC led to only 4 points late in the third quarter. Indian River would hang on to an 8-point led defeating HCC 74-66, earning their 19th win of the season.

The Pioneers begin to face adversity when Claire Simmons took a hard fall late in the second quarter. In the third quarter sophomore point guard Janiah Alexander pick up her fourth foul and Rapuluchi Ngorka earn her fourth foul late in the fourth quarter causing both of them to remain on the bench.

"We grew as a team tonight, Monique and Anteresa stepped up big for us which helped us to earn this win with low numbers" Coach Robinson noted.

Despite the adversity, the Pioneers had four players in double digits. Rapuluchi Ngorka scored 21 points and 18 rebounds. George Mason Signee Tavi Habib Scored 15 points and 15 rebounds. Jasmine Peaks added 15 points, four assist and six assists. Shomari Phillips tallied 10 points and two rebounds.

With the win, the Pioneers are 19-3 on the season and 3-0 in southern conference play. The River will be back in action Wednesday January 25th against Florida Southwestern.
