2022-2023 IRSC Men’s Basketball Season Recap

The Indian River Men's Basketball season has come to a close in the Region VIII Tournament after a 106-105 loss to Northwest Florida State. The Pioneers finished the season with a 24-7 record and Southern Conference Champions for the 4th year in a row with a 10-2 conference record. The Pioneers had six players average at least 10 points per game in conference play. In their 24 wins on the season their average margin of victory was 18.3 points, and their rebounding margin was +13 per game.

The 2022-2023 Pioneers were ranked in the top 10 in the country in 10 different statistics. Ranked #7 in the NJCAA NET Rankings, and ranked 1st in Region VIII. They led the country in offensive rebounds grabbing 19.7 per game, #2 in the country in turnovers forced with 23 per game. They were also 2nd in the country in made field goals with a total of 1,061 as well as free throw attempts with 787, while coming in 3rd with 529 free throws made on the season. The Pioneers up-tempo offense had them 5th in the country scoring 95.7 points per game and ranked 5th in total rebounds with 47.3 per game. This year's team was also very unselfish and ranked 10th in assists, dishing out 20.3 assists per game.

This year's team opened their season with a 21-point win at home over FSCJ and followed that up with a 26 point win over Southwest Tennessee on their way to open the season with a 5-0 start. On November 25th Indian River traveled to State College of Florida to play Gordon State College where they earned an impressive 50-point win, and they were able to back up their performance with a 22-point win over Georgia Highlands the next day.

In conference play the Pioneers won 8 straight on their way to claim sole possession of first place. Making a statement in a 103-69 win at State College of Florida where they forced 39 turnovers. The Pioneers swept the season series with Miami Dade, Hillsborough, and State College of Florida to help propel them to become conference champions for the fourth straight year.

The Pioneers have earned eight conference awards this season, three players were named to the first team all-conference, another three players named to second team all-conference, and one player named to honorable mention. Congratulations to the following student athletes being acknowledged for their hard work and dedication this season.

Head Coach Bill Morosco was also named Southern Conference Coach of the year. Here is what Coach Morosco had to say on the awards "It's an honor to being recognized by the rest of the conference for what we have accomplished this year, and I am proud of our guy's commitment to excellence and the accolades they have earned."

Jayshayne Woodard was named Southern Conference Player of the year and the Region VIII, averaging a double-double with 10.6PPG, 11.8RPG, 3.5APG, 1.6SPG, and 1.4BPG

Micah Octave was named First Team All-Conference as well as being named to the Region VIII All-Tournament team where he averaged 30PPG, 5RPG, 3APG, and 6SPG.
