Indian River defeats St. Johns River at home

After a great opening weekend, The Pioneers were looking to get another win to keep the streak going. The Vikings were entering their first match of the season while The Pioneers were entering their third.  

The Vikings jumped out quick, taking the opening set 25-20. Indian River then strike back in the second set, jumping out to an early 8-1 lead. The Pioneers continued to apply pressure and closed out set two 25-18 to even the match. The Vikings stayed alive in set three as the game went back and forth for the first half of the set. Indian River began to struggle as St. John's River took the lead 16-22. The Pioneers continued to fight their way back but came up short, losing the third set 25-23.

Down 2-1 to the start of the fourth set, the Pioneers knew they had to come out with a lot of energy. With a mix of siding out very efficiently and applying great service pressure, Indian River took the momentum and ran with a 18-7 lead. The Pioneers won the fourth set 25-14, forcing a fifth set.

The fifth set began point for point until the Pioneers pushed a 9-6 lead after the teams switched sides. Indian River continued to push the lead as they were able to close out the match 15-9, giving them a fifth set victory.

Top performers for IRSC included Sophomore Middle Blocker, Zuzanna Rut (10 kills, 6 blocks), Sophomore Setter, Valeria Ivanova (35 assist, 11 digs) and Sophomore Outside Hitter, Olivia Melton (17 kills, 16 digs).

Indian River will hit the road to play their next match on Wednesday, August 23, at 6pm against Pasco-Hernando State College.
