Indian River Volleyball Suffers Tough Lost at HCC

The first conference road game of the year is finally here, and the Pioneer volleyball team is traveling across the state to take on rival Hillsborough Community College. Hillsborough enters the match as the 10th top 20 in the nation team the Pioneers have faced this season, making this another tough match for the River.

6PM first serve and the game is on, and HCC spared no time jumping out to a lead with aggressive serving and smart, low error play. Through the entire first set, HCC made only two errors, making the Pioneers earn almost all of their points. This proved to be an effective strategy as the Pioneers looked to be playing catch up the whole first set, and would eventually fall 19-25.

The River may have lost the first one but they were building momentum, and the beginning of the next set was a different story. The game would go back and forth with both teams playing very well and making very few errors. All the way up until 17-17 the game remained very close, but behind an aggressive serving run from #16 Matilda Dahlstrom, HCC would take the second set 25-20.

Moving into the third set, the Pioneer squad looked a little defeated from the start and never really recovered. The play grew sloppy and it looked like they had run out of options. Going down big early due to trouble in serve receive, they never would recover and ultimately would be swept in the third set, losing 13-25 in the final.

A disappointing loss on the road for the first away match of the year. The Pioneers were led by Greta Klotz (12 Kills, 7 Digs) and Taylor Flint (6 Kills, 4 Digs).

The Pioneers host two non-conference opponents this weekend at home at the Massey Campus Gym.
