River Gets First Sweep of the Season

Tuesday, September 7, the River took to the road for Bradenton for their first road conference match on the year and their 3rd conference match overall against State College of Florida. The River would enter this match sitting at 1-6 on the year and 1-1 in the Suncoast conference, making this an early must win.

The River would open the match aggressively with lots of big swings and some pinpoint serving to quickly take the first set 25-15. The River only posted 1 hitting error in the first set, hitting over 0.400!

In set 2 The River came out strong starting set 2 with a 5-0 run. The Manatees would not go down easy however, as they would fight their way back and making the score 9-10 in favor of the River. The Manatees were able to keep it within 3 points for the remainder of the second set. However, a big kill on a slide from Sophomore Middle Blocker Jeyhlen Thomas sealed the fate of the Manatee's giving River a 2-0 set lead with a score of 25-21.

The final set was a heated one as well, with much of the manatee crowd getting involved. The two teams battled back and forth, keeping the score close. The Manatee's called a time out with a score of 10-9 in favor of the River. Coming out of the timeout The River get the point off of a kill from Sophomore Mallory Roney to allow the team to grab some momentum.  The manatee's made it a close one but it wasn't enough with River getting the sweep with a final score of 25-20.

The River rallied behind top attacker Greta Klotz who had 9 kills. Other top performers for the River included Sophomore Libero Jasmine Sayre who lead the team defense with 15 digs. Sophomore Middle Blocker Jeyhlen Thomas had herself a game as well with 6 kills and 2 blocks.

This win brings the River to 2-1 in conference and their next match is a home match at 6pm against Florida Southwestern.
