IRSC Volleyball Has Strong Performance at HCC Tournament

The Indian River State College Women's Volleyball season got underway with a tournament on the road in Tampa at Hillsborough Community College on Friday, August 23.

In their season opener, the Pioneers won three straight sets to take the match win against the Florida State College at Jacksonville. Indian River came out strong, beating Florida State College 25 -10 in the first set, followed with a second set win of 25 -15 and a final set 25 -19.  Florida State College had no answer for Mallory Roney who finished the match with 11 kills and teammates Valentina Beltran and Gabriela Fialova added 12 and 11 digs respectively. Jada Bivins and Erin Ergle combined to register 33 assists.

Saturday in their first of two matches, despite 16 kills and 13 digs by Raadsheer and Beltran nearly joining the 25 dig club and racking up 23 defended attacks, the Pioneers dropped the match to Hillsborough Community College. The Pioneers showed great effort with the first set 22-25, rebounding to win the second 25-20 before dropping a close third set 24-26 and being outlasted 15-25 in the fourth.

In the second match of the day Saturday, the Pioneers could've have gotten down emotionally after their tough four-set defeat against HCC, but such was not the case. The Pioneers rose to the occasion and showed resilience, refusing to concede to Lake Sumter. IRSC prevailed in five sets 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-13.

Raadsheer again led the charge on offense collecting 18 kills while Bivins added 11.  Roney finished with 9 kills and Henry contributed 8. Beltran recorded 16 digs while Jacki Schmitz and Gabriela Fialova registered 4 aces each.

IRSC Volleyball returns to action on the road at South Florida State College on Wednesday, August 28, with a 6:00 p.m. game time.
