IRSC Volleyball Finishes 5th at FCSAA State/Region Tournament

After splitting their first two matches of the NJCAA State tournament, the IRSC Women's volleyball team played their most inspired volleyball of the season against defending champion and the nation's top ranked team, Miami-Dade College. The Pioneers did not emerge victorious from that final match, but they played well enough to knock off a team that had held a winning streak of over 60 matches before the tournament began. They took a set off of the Sharks, and competed throughout the entire match. Miami-Dade wound up with a 3-1 victory (17-25, 26-28, 25-23, 21-25). Prior to that final match against Miami-Dade, IRSC fell to Santa Fe College 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 25-18), and defeated Richard Bland College 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11).
Tournament Totals:
Offensively, Sophomore Opposite Hitter Lindsay Glynn led the Pioneers over the course of the tournament, finishing with 31 kills. Sophomore Outside Hitter Jenna Erwin was just one kill behind, accumulating 30 terminations, for an average of 10 kills per match. Sophomore Outside Hitter McKenna Tyson amassed 22 kills, including a match-high 15; on fire in that final match against Miami-Dade. Sophomore Middle Blocker Brittany Beckelheimer finished with 12 put-aways to go with 5 blocks, and her counterpart in the middle, Freshman Jacki Schmitz finished with 6 six blocks, 2 of them solo.
Defensively, Sophomore Libero Rebecca Sills held the torch for the Pioneers, finishing with 64 digs over three matches, including 25 in an excellent effort against Miami-Dade. Erwin matched her solid production on offense with a stout defensive effort, finishing with 44 digs, while Glynn chipped in 26 digs.
Ultimately, the Pioneers' third and final match against Miami-Dade was an excellent way for the Sophomores to finish their playing careers at IRSC; and for the Freshman to end their first season, proving to themselves the level of volleyball they are capable of heading into the off-season. The future looks bright for Indian River Volleyball.
