Pioneers Finish 1-2 at Conference Tournament

The IRSC Women's volleyball team participated in their second round of conference play this weekend at the conference tournament held at Broward College in Davie; winning one match, and dropping two.

They suffered defeats to nationally top-ranked Miami-Dade College (16-25, 15-25, 22-25), and Broward College (22-25, 20-25, 27-29), but they were able to pick up their second consecutive victory over Palm Beach State (25-14, 25-11, 17-25, 25-16).

In the match against Miami-Dade, IRSC was led in attack by Sophomore Outside Hitter Jenna Erwin and Sophomore Opposite Lindsay Glynn, who each finished with 8 kills.

Sophomore Rebecca Sills led IRSC with 6 digs in the match while Erwin contributed 5.

Facing Palm Beach State, the Pioneers' pace was set by Erwin, who finished with 17 kills, while Glynn and Sophomore Middle Blocker Jacki Schmitz chipped in 7 kills each.

Defensively, the standard was set for the second time in three matches by Freshman Setter Jada Bivins, who tallied 17 digs, while Sophomore Libero Rebecca Sills and Sophomore Outside Hitter McKenna Tyson each contributed 10.

In their final match of the tournament, against Broward College, Erwin again took the reins on offense and landed 10 successful attacks. Glynn and Tyson added 6 kills apiece.

Freshman Defensive Specialist Valentina had a standout match for the Pioneers, and led the team in digs with 16. Erwin and Bivins dug 13 Broward attacks apiece.

The Pioneers still control their own destiny in the conference, but they now must defeat Broward College in their next meeting in order to clinch second place, as the teams have split their meetings and share a record of 1-1 against each other.

The River returns to action Wednesday when they visit Palm Beach State for their third conference tilt.
