IRSC Volleyball Prevails Over Broward College

IRSC Volleyball Prevails Over Broward College

The Indian River State College Women's Volleyball team emerged victorious last night against Broward College in a thrilling five-set victory (25-27, 25-22, 25-10, 25-27, 15-7).

The Pioneers got off to a strong start, but Broward was able to mount a comeback to steal set one. IRSC responded well, taking the second set and dominating the third. Broward college refused to go down without a fight, however, and were able to take set four. River jumped out to an early lead in the fifth set, and never looked back, playing solid volleyball in all phases of the game.

The Pioneers were formidable in attack, as three players finished with double digit kills. Sophomore Outside Hitter Jenna Erwin led the charge, putting away 16 kills and finishing with a .314 attack percentage. Sophomore Opposite Lindsay Glynn did her best to keep up, racking up 15 kills of her own for a very efficient .400 clip, while adding two service aces. Sophomore Outside Hitter McKenna Tyson collected 11 kills, including several momentum-building put-aways early in the decisive fifth set. Sophomore Middle Blocker Brittany Beckelheimer finished just beneath the threshold for double-digit kills, finishing with eight put-aways and just one error on the night.

Besides leading her team in offensive production, Erwin also set the standard defensively, accumulating a match-high 23 digs. Freshman Setter Jada Bivins put on perhaps her best defensive performance of the season, contributing 17 digs for the Pioneers while delivering 45 assists. Sophomore libero Rebecca Sills added 16 digs, and registered her first kill of the season.

This conference win puts IRSC in second place heading into the second round of conference play. They return to action Friday evening in their second tilt of the season against Miami-Dade College.
