Blue and Gold Game Bodes Well for Upcoming Season

The women's volleyball team played its annual intra squad contest, The Blue and Gold Game, in front of packed bleachers and a raucous crowd yesterday. If this annual match is indicative of the team's potential success this season, yesterday was a promising start to this year's upcoming campaign. With IRSC's Vice President of Student Affairs Mr. Frank Watkins on the sidelines for the Gold Team, and Dr. Ed Massey, the President of Indian River State College taking the reins for the Blue Team, the match came down to a decisive third set. The gold team got off to a blistering start, building to a 10 point lead early on. They came into the match ready for a fight, swinging aggressively on offense, serving tough, patrolling the net as blockers, and bringing great energy. The Gold Team maintained control throughout, and took the first set 25-16. After reigning in their excitement a bit and settling into a rhythm, the Blue team put game one behind them and played a much more efficient second set. Making improvements in serve receive and attack, the Blue Team was able to counterpunch, winning the second set 25-18. The third and decisive set (played to 15) saw several lead changes and momentum swings. The fans brought some amazing energy, doing their best to provide momentum to their favored squads. Ultimately The Blue team prevailed 15-11, earning bragging rights for this year's contest. 

Sophomore Jenna Erwin led the way for The Blue Team, tallying 11 kills, while Sophomore Lindsay Glynn chipped in 5 kills and a couple of aces herself. For the Gold team, Freshman Ayannah Henry led the way with 7 kills, while McKenna Tyson contributed 6 kills of her own. The Pioneers look to bring the promise and solid play from last night's battle into their first official contest of the season on Wednesday when they face Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne at 6pm.
