Volleyball Takes Down Broward for Southern Conference Win

The Pioneers opened the Southern Conference with a three set win over Broward College last night in front of their home crowd. It was a great team effort to take home the first Conference victory. In the first set, IRSC was down 16-19 before taking over the game. IRSC scored 9 out of the next 10 points to take the first set 25-20. In the second, IRSC commanded the court hitting an impressive .448 and never looked back, finishing the set 25-10. The third set proved to be an exciting one as the Pioneers trailed late in the game 21-23. A service ace by Flavia Rusterholz tied the score at 23-23.The game got knotted up again at 24-24 and Sarah Egbers gave The River a big kill to put them up 25-24 in a win-by-two potential match point. The match was ended in less dramatic fashion from a hitting error by Broward as IRSC took home their first Southern Conference win for the season.

There were many impactful players that helped IRSC take down their conference foes at home in 3 sets: 25-20, 25-10, 26-24.

Freshmen, Lindsay Glynn and McKenna Tyson provided much of the offense on the night. Glynn showed a strong performance in the front row with 12 kills, 8 digs, 2 blocks, and an ace. Tyson, a middle blocker, added another 10 kills, 5 blocks, and 5 digs. Sarah Egbers (9 kills, 2 blocks) and Brittany Beckelheimer (7 kills, 2 blocks) also had some great contributions on the night.

Coming off her Setter of the Week accolades, setter Jordan Shoemaker dished out 42 assists while earning 8 digs, 2 blocks, and an ace. Libero Becca Sills scrapped up 23 digs in the 3 sets.

The conference win brings the volleyball team to 4-6 on the season. Indian River will take on Southern Conference opponent Miami Dade next Wednesday in Miami at 6pm.
