River rises to pick up second conference win versus ASA -Miami

Indian River State College women's basketball moves to 2-1 in conference action after a solid win versus ASA-Miami. 

The Pioneers were not ready for the fighting spirit of the ASA-Miami Silver Streaks as they hit three 3 point shots in the opening quarter. Shell shocked the River answered back behind the three point shooting of freshman guard, Kiara Cadore as she dropped two three's of her own to keep the River within reach. A defensive error by ASA Miami sent Edley Drawhorn to the line and that moved the Pioneers to a 14-11 lead to end a back and forth first quarter. After regrouping the Pioneers showed an entirely different team in effort as they held ASA-Miami to no points, while offensively executing to score 23. The Pioneers showed tremendouse resiliency as they bounced back from a slow start and turned up the defensive teamwork to bring the halftime score to 37-11.

Halftime did not shake the Pioneers desire to pick up another needed conference win as their defensive efforts stayed steady allowing ASA-Miami to only score 3 points. Third quarter found the River increasing their lead by a score of 17-3. Edley Drawhorn was on a mission to ensure her team a mark in the win column as she contributed 17 points in the second half. However, ASA-Miami was not down for the count as they continued to fight until the final horn attacking the River from the perimeter dropping four three point shots in the final minutes to challenge the Pioneers 26-14. ASA-Miami's heart showed throughout the game as they never waivered in energy and teamwork, but the Pioneers focus was too much for the Silver Streaks to handle as they fell 80-28.

"Our team has been focusing so hard on our defensive effort and tonight they saw it's reward", said sixth year head coach Diana Couch. "Their ability to pull together after that first quarter and hold ASA-Miami to zero demostrated to them that together they can achieve more defensively than as inidividuals. We are very proud of their efforts tonight to focus on the little details and to recognize the impact that can have. We also enjoy watching Edley Drawhorn work, her effort is very steady and most the time we don't even realize what she has accomplished until the game has ended. Her teammates really contribute to her success. Tonight was a great team effort and win for us." 

Edley Drawhorn led the Pioneers in scoring with an impressive 21 points and Kiara Cadore followed with 14 points, going 2-3 from behind the arc. Freshman Kiandra Hooks contributed 12 points and Cyann Fox rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points and 7 assists.

The Pioneers move to 7-11 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference action. They will face an undefeated Broward College team at home Tuesday, January 23rd at 5:00 p.m.
