Indian River Opens Season with Six Wins in Clearwater

The Indian River State College women's softball team open the 2020 season winning six games in the Adidas Kickoff Classic in Clearwater this past weekend.

Friday night the team opened the season with a pair of wins against East Georgia State 14-2 and Florence Darlington 10-2.  Against East Georgia freshman pitcher Taylor Wroten tossed four innings, struck out seven, allowing four hits.  Freshman Taylor Owen paced the offense driving in four runs with a pair of doubles.  In the win against Florence Darlington freshman pitcher Jaden Williamson went four innings, allowing three hits, striking out four.  Freshman catcher Maeghan Branche hit the team's first homerun of season, a two run blast in the bottom of the 1st inning.

On Saturday the Pioneers defeated FSCJ 8-5 in the first game of the day.  In game two the Pioneers topped Enterprise State of Alabama 10-0.  Against FSCJ pitcher Taylor Wroton tossed 10 innings, striking out 13 batters in winning her second game of the season. Tayler Owen delivered the big hit driving in a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Pioneers to the extra inning victory.   Against Enterprise State freshman pitcher tossed four shutout innings, struck out seven and allowed only one hit in earning her first win on the season.  Sophomore outfielder Kisrsy Graville paced the offense driving in two runs.

On Sunday the Pioneers continued their winning ways defeating Iowa Central 5-4 and Georgia Highlands 7-0.  Against Iowa Central pitcher Jaden Williamson won her second game of the weekend.  Williamson tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Starter Hailey Astill.  Jaden allowed only one hit and struck out three.  Kirsty Granville, Meaghan Branche, Shayne Hewitt, and Morgan Roberts had two hits each to pace the offense.  Against Georgia Highlands pitcher Casey Kurent was dominant.  Kurent tossed a seven inning shutout, allowed two hits, and struck out five.  Maeghan Branche and Macie Stanfield hit homeruns to lead the Pioneer offense.

The 6-0 Pioneers hope to remain perfect on the season when they travel to Daytona on Wednesday to take on Daytona State College in a double-header.  Game times in Daytona are 4:00pm and 6:00.
