Indian River State College Captures Southern Conference Title

Indian River State College's women's softball team swept Miami Dade on Saturday in Miami. With the two wins IRSC captured its 5th consecutive Southern Conference Championship. IRSC defeated Miami 5-3 in game one of the double-header and took game two 7-4.

Rallying from a 3-0 deficit, IRSC took the lead scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning and hung on to defeat Miami Dade College 5-3 in game one.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning, the Pioneers tied things up at three when Madison Headley singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.

The game was tied 3-3 with IRSC batting in the top of the eighth when Mya Maddox drew a bases loaded walk, scoring the game winning run.

Sophomore pitcher Dawn Bodrug (19-6) led her team to victory in the circle. She went eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out six and walking one.

Indian River collected 12 hits on the day. Headley, Maddox, and Lillie Rodriguez all had multiple hits. Headley went 5-for-5 at the plate to lead the team in hits.

The Pioneers once again stole the lead late in the second game in the 7-4 victory. The game was tied at two with IRSC batting in the top of the fifth when Taylor Dyal to hit into a run scoring fielder's choice, putting "The River" up for good.

The Pioneers got on the board in the first inning when Juliana Speranza hit her twelfth homerun on the season, putting the Pioneers up 2-0.

Freshman pitcher Hailey Astill (7-3) was credited with the victory. She surrendered four runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out one.

With Miami rallying, Speranza launched her second homerun of the day in the sixth inning to complete the teams scoring..

Indian River racked up 11 hits in the game. Mya Maddox, Michalla Reddick, Speranza, and Madison Headley all had multiple hits for IRSC. Reddick and Maddox both had three hits to lead the offense.

The 30-13 Pioneers will be at home Wednesday to take on Broward College. Game times in Ft. Pierce are at 2:00 & 4:00.
