Indian River Takes Two From Eastern Florida

Indian River State College Pioneers women's softball team won both games of a double header against Eastern Florida yesterday in Ft. Pierce. IRSC took game one 6-1 and won 13-6 in game two. In the opening game Indian River opened up the scoring in the first inning. Mya Maddox grounded out, scoring Madison Headley.

The Pioneers tallied four more runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught came from a bases clearing triple by Juhle Prange. Sophomore pitcher Dawn Bodrug (18-6) was the winning pitcher. Bodrug tossed a complete game, allowing one run on three hits and striking out nine. Juliana Speranza went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead IRSC in hits.

In game two freshman catcher Juhle Prange would not be denied at the plate when runners were on base, driving in four on two hits to lead Indian River past Eastern Florida 13-6. Prange launched a grand slam in the sixth to help propel the Pioneers to victory.
IRSC collected 11 hits in the high-scoring affair.

Indian River took the lead in the first inning when Taylor Dyal homered on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs. The Pioneers took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Rachael Samaniego singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run, Mya Maddox singled scoring two runs, and Juliana Speranza singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run.

IRSC notched five more runs in the sixth inning to break the game open. Freshman Hailey Astill (6-3) was the winning pitcher. She allowed seven hits and six runs over four innings, striking out one. Dawn Bodrug threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen, earning her first save of the season. Bodrug recorded the last nine outs of the game, striking out seven batters.

IRSC smacked two home runs on the day. Prange went yard in the sixth inning. Dyal had a long ball in the first inning. Indian River tallied 11 hits in the game. Maddox, Prange, Speranza, and Dyal all managed multiple hits. Dyal, Speranza, Prange, and Maddox each managed two hits to lead the offense. With the two wins the Pioneers continued their surge to the top of the Southern Conference standings. The conference leading Pioneers (28-13 / 12-2) won their twelfth consecutive game and extended their lead in the conference to three games over second place Eastern Florida.

The Pioneers travel to Miami on Saturday, taking on conference rival Miami Dade. Game times in Miami are 1:00 & 3:00.
