IRSC Softball Opens Conference Season

Indian River State College opened the 2019 conference season in Palm Beach this past weekend. On Saturday IRSC split two games defeating Palm Beach but suffered an extra inning loss to Eastern Florida in game two. On Sunday the Pioneers also split games, winning game one against Broward College but dropped game two to Miami Dade in another extra inning game.

In the first game IRSC's Juliana Speranza was bad news for Palm Beach State pitchers on Saturday, driving in five runs on three hits to lead IRSC past Palm Beach State 18-3. Speranza drove in runs on a single in the second, a double in the fourth, and a home run in the fifth.
IRSC broke the game open putting up seven runs in the fourth inning. The Pioneers scored on RBI singles by Brittini Norwood and Mikayla Hart, doubles by Speranza and Taylor Dyal, and a groundout by Madison Headley. Hailey Astill earned the victory. She lasted five innings, allowing six hits and three runs while walking zero. The Pioneers collected 15 hits on the day. Norwood, Speranza, Dyal, Headley, and Hart all had multiple hits for IRSC. Speranza and Norwood had three hits apiece to lead the offense.

In Saturday's second game against Eastern Florida was a heartbreaker for the Pioneers, as they lost the lead late in a 7-3 extra inning defeat. IRSC lost despite out-hitting Eastern Florida 13 to 7. Brooke Mathews, Juhle Prange, and Madison Headley all managed multiple hits for IRSC. Mathews led the way with four hits in five at bats.
