Indian River Defeats Daytona State

Indian River State College Softball won both games of a double-header in Ft. Pierce on Thursday afternoon. IRSC's offense had a huge day scoring 20 runs in the 21-1 and 9-2 wins over Daytona State.


Sophomore first baseman Juliana Speranza belted a grand slam in the second to pace the offense. IRSC secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the second inning. Mya Maddox, Speranza, and Rachael Samaniego powered the big inning with RBIs.
Sophomore pitcher Liz Gollin (2-0) got the start for "The River." She tossed five innings, allowing two hits, one run, struck out eight, and walked one.


Indian River totaled 15 hits in the game. Adriana Otero, Samaniego, Brooke Mathews, Speranza, and Madison Headley all managed multiple hits for the Pioneers. Otero went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the team in hits. Defensively the Pioneers didn't commit an error.


In the second game once again the Pioneers used a big inning to break open a close game scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was tied at two with the Pioneers batting in the bottom of the fifth when Kirsty Granville singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run putting IRSC on top to stay 3-2. The Pioneers big inning was fueled by Granville, Mya Maddox, Juliana Speranza, and Juhle Prange, all driving in runs in the frame.


IRSC got things going in the first inning on an RBI single by Speranza. Freshman catcher Juhle Prage hit her first homerun as a Pioneer in the second inning to put the Pioneers up 2-0 but the Falcons managed to tie the game 2-2 scoring twice in the top of the third inning.


Sophomor pitcher (3-1) Dawn Bodrug got the win for Indian River. She allowed three hits and two runs over 5.1 innings, striking out eight. Freshman pitcher Hailey Astill tossed the final 1.2 innings relief out of the bullpen.


Indian River State launched three home runs on the day. Prange had dingers in the second and fifth innings. Speranza put one out in the fifth inning.


Indian River totaled ten hits in the game. Maddox, Prange, and Speranza each had multiple hits. Speranza, Prange, and Maddox each collected two hits to lead the Pioneer offense. IRSC stayed perfect defesively in the second game as well not committing a single error.

 

The 6-2 Pioneers will next take on Polk State this Saturday in Ft. Pierce. The doubleheader game times are 1:00 & 3:00.
