Indian River Sweeps Broward, Punches Ticket to State Tournament

Indian River State College won both games of a double-header against Broward State College on Friday night in Ft. Lauderdale.  The Conference leading Pioneers (13-1) clinched a spot in the state tournament with the two wins.

Freshman pitcher Liz Gollin (16-3) led the Pioneers to victory on the pitcher's mound. She allowed five hits and one run over six innings, striking out nine. Indian River had 12 hits in the game. Taylor Strickland, Savannah Julylia, and Jaden Kline each managed multiple hits for "The River."  

With sophomore pitcher Valerie Alvarado (9-2) on the mound, Indian River shutout Broward in game two 13-0 in five innings.  Alvarado didn't allow a single run, allowed three hits, and struck out six in her five innings of work. IRSC got on the board in the first inning scoring three runs when Jaden Kline hit her sixth homerun on the season.

The Pioneers put up six runs in the fourth inning. Crystal Grimaldo, Juliana Speranza, Callie Rodriguez, and Danielle Bieberle all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. "The River" tallied 12 hits in the game. Kline, Savannah Julylia, and Speranza each collected multiple hits for Indian River. Kline led the offense with four hits in four at bats.

The (35-11) #9 nationally ranked Pioneers return to action on Wednesday in Ft. Pierce taking on Palm Beach State College.  Game one begins at 2:00pm, game two is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm.
