Indian River State Softball Opens Season with Five Wins in Clearwater, Coach Atkinson Earns 900th win as IRSC Head Coach

IRSC 22- Puerto Rico University 0

In the opening game on Friday sophomore pitcher Valerie Alvarado and freshman pitcher Dawn Bodrug combined on the five inning shutout win over Puerto Rico University.

Sophomore first baseman Taylor Strickland led Indian River State College Pioneers Varsity to victory by driving in four runs. She went 2-for-2 at the plate. Strickland drove in runs on a single in the first and a double in the second

IRSC hit two home runs on the day. Freshman third baseman Crystal Grimaldo went deep in the first inning and sophomore catcher Dream Aaron put one out in the second inning.

The Pioneers scattered 17 hits in the game. Michalyn Bingham, Strickland, Dani Bieberle, and Morgan Greco all managed multiple hits for IRSC. Bingham led  the Pioneers with three hits in three at bats. The Pioneers defense was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error.

 

IRSC11- Tallahassee Community College 0

In the second game of the day on Friday against TCC freshman pitcher Elizabeth Gollin tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and struck out eight.

Indian River secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the fifth inning. Jaden Kline, Taylor Strickland, Michalyn Bingham, Morgan Greco, Crystal Grimaldo, and Dream Aaron all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

IRSC totaled 11 hits. Bingham, Grimaldo, and Kline each managed multiple hits for the Lady Pioneers. Kline, Grimaldo, and Bingham each managed two hits to lead IRSC.

 

IRSC 8 - Georgia Military 0

The first game on Saturday matched NJCAA nationally ranked #20 Pioneers against 18th ranked Georgia Military.

Against GMC Freshman pitcher Dawn Bodrug didn't allow a single hit as IRSC defeated Georgia Military 8-0.

IRSC opened up the scoring in the first inning with a run scoring single by Dream Aaron.

The Pioneers tallied four more runs in the sixth inning. Morgan Greco, Jaden Kline and Arron all contributed to big inning with run scoring hits.

Bodrug got the win allowing no hits, walks or runs in her six innings of work, striking out eleven.

IRSC racked up 16 hits in the game. Savannah Julylia, Michalyn Bingham, Aaron, Adriana Otero, and Kline each collected multiple hits for the Pioneers. Aaron, Bingham, and Julylia all had three hits to lead "The River."

 

IRSC 14 – Iowa Central 4

The second game of the day on Saturday was another matchup of two nationally ranked teams pitting the 20th ranked Pioneers against 19th ranked Iowa Central.

IRSC opened the game scoring three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the second the Lady Tritons responded scoring four runs to take a 4-3.

The Pioneers quickly responded in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs to retake the lead and pulled away for the victory. Morgan Greco singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run and Savannah Julylia doubled on the first pitch of her at bat, driving in a run to put the Pioneers back in the lead 5-4.

IRSC put up five more runs in the fifth inning. Greco, Julylia, Dream Aaron, and Adriana Otero powered the big inning with RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Valerie Alvarado earned her second win on the season. She surrendered five runs on six hits over five innings, striking out eight.

The Pioneers tallied 11 hits in the game. Michalyn Bingham, Julylia, and Greco each collected multiple hits for IRSC. Bingham led "The River" with three hits in four at bats. Danielle Bieberle led the team with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with eight stolen bases.

 

IRSC 9 – HCC 1

In the team's final game of the weekend the Pioneers scored five runs in the fourth on its way to a 9-1 victory over HCC. The offensive onslaught came from singles by Michalyn Bingham and Savannah Julylia, a triple by Morgan Greco, and a home run by Dream Aaron.

Freshman pitcher Liz Gollin got the win for IRSC. She surrendered one run on two hits over four and a third innings, striking out eight. Dawn Bodrug threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

IRSC racked up 11 hits in the game. Danielle Bieberle, Bingham, and Crystal Grimaldo all managed multiple hits for IRSC. Bingham and Bieberle all had three hits to lead the team.  IRSC was also sure-handed and didn't commit a single error.

IRSC returns to action on Thursday, February 1st taking on South Florida State College in the teams opening home game in Ft. Pierce.  Game times for the double-header has the opening game starting at 2:00Pm with game two scheduled to start at 4:00pm.
