Pioneers Defeat ASA

Fort Pierce, Florida – The Pioneers moved into second place of the Southern Conference on Wednesday, as they defeated ASA 88-74. The Indian River State College (IRSC) Men's Basketball Team moved their overall record to 19-9 and 5-5 in the conference with two games left on the schedule.

IRSC jumped out to a great start as they took an early 10-1 lead. The Pioneers defense held ASA scoreless for over 5 minutes, allowing them to score their first basket at the 13:55 mark when they converted a free-throw. ASA fought back and pulled the score to 14-10 with 10 minutes remaining in the half, but IRSC went on a 7-0 run and increased the lead to 21-10. The two teams traded basket for the rest of the half with the Pioneers taking a 39-29 advantage into halftime.

IRSC came out of the locker-room ready to play, "we started the half with more focus and did a nice job of executing on the offensive end of the floor," stated IRSC Head Coach Charlie Wilson. D.J. Winston gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the game when he drove to the basket and hit a mid-range jumper making the score 58-35 with just under 14 minutes on the clock. ASA made on final run cutting the margin to 9, as they convert a couple of three-point baskets making the score 72-63. IRSC settled down and turned up their defensive pressure and shut down ASA as they went on to an 88-74 win.

The Pioneers had a balance scoring attack lead by Kimani Binder with 22, DeJuan Lockett 14, Charlie Daniels 12, Jai Clark 10, Micah Johnson 10 and D.J. Winston tossed in 9 points.

IRSC will travel to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, February 23 to take on Broward College for a 4 p.m. tip.
