IRSC men's basketball team capture Southern Conference Championship

The Indian River State College men's basketball defeated Broward College 84-70.

It was "Sophomore Night" at the River with 7 sophomores being recognized for their contribution to the IRSC Men's Basketball Program.  The seven sophomores, Kevin Grace, Cedric Jackson, Anthony Brown, Deontae Weaver, Shaquille Rombley, Oliver Ehrnvall, and Justin Tucker were escort by family and friends to center court where they were honored for their accomplishments. "This group of sophomores has exceeded our expectations and changed the culture of our program," stated a proud IRSC Head Coach Charlie Wilson.

The Pioneers finished the season with a 10-2 record in the Southern Conference and a two game lead over the second place finisher, Palm Beach State College.  "I couldn't be prouder of the way our guys have competed this season," commented Coach Wilson.  The victory increased IRSC's overall record to 23-7 and gave them their first Southern Conference Title since the 2009-10 season.  The Pioneers didn't waste much time building a double digit lead early in the first half on a nifty inside move by Kimani Binder, 26-15. IRSC was able to keep the lead at 10 for most of the ballgame finishing with an 84-70 win.  Top scorers on the evening were Deontae Weaver 20 points, Anthony Brown 16, Cedric Jackson 15, and Justin Tucker with 13.  Brown also collected 11 rebounds and dished out 6 assists.

By winning the Southern Conference, IRSC secured a trip to the FCSAA Basketball Championship Tournament in Ocala, Florida.  The Pioneers will take on St. Petersburg College at 6 p.m. on Wednesday March 7th.
