Men’s Basketball Move to 5-0 After Successful Veterans Classic

The Indian River State College (IRSC) Men's Basketball Team had a big weekend at the 2^nd Annual IRSC Men's Basketball Veterans Classic which was sponsored by The Van Duzer Foundation.  The Pioneers defeated Andrew College on Friday night 102-63.  IRSC jumped out to a 52-26 lead at the half and continued to increase the margin for a 39 point victory.  Leading scorers for the contest were Anthony Brown 19 points, followed by Cedric Jackson with 16, Kimani Binder 13, and Deontae Weaver added 12.   Head Coach Charlie Wilson was pleased with the offensive balance, "Our guys have done a nice job of sharing the basketball, so far this season and have been willing to make the extra pass for the better shot."  Anthony Brown has been the catalyst distributing the ball this season and dished out 13 assists for the game.  The Pioneers also controlled the rebounding aspect of the game 44-36, with Justin Tucker and Shaq Rombley combining for 16 total rebounds.

The IRSC Men's Basketball Veterans Classic was established last year as an opportunity to recognize local Veterans for their service, "We thought this would be a great way to recognize Veterans for the sacrifices they have made for our country," stated Coach Charlie Wilson.  Veterans who were in attendance Friday evening were recognized for their service between games.  The IRSC Men's Team took time to shake each Veterans' hand before their game, "I was very proud of our guys stepping up and going to center court to personally thank each Veteran for their service," commented Coach Wilson. "We appreciate all Veterans who attended the games this weekend."  All proceeds collected over the two day tournament will be donated to local Veteran organizations.       

On Saturday night IRSC  took on Florida National JV, and it was much of the same for the Pioneers who came away with a 92-53 win and moved their record to 5-0.  IRSC took an early 9-2 lead and went into the half leading by 32 points, 54-22.  IRSC was led in scoring by Anthony Brown with 20 points, Justin Tucker 17, and Kimani Binder added 14.  Justin Tucker recorded his first double-double of the season by collecting 10 of the Pioneers 59 total rebounds.

Coach Charlie Wilson thought the tournament was a success "I want to personally thank the Van Duzer Foundation for sponsoring the tournament and taking care of the teams, it made for a special weekend." 

The Pioneers will be in action at Jacksonville FL on Tuesday November 14^th for a 7 p.m. start as they take on Florida State College-Jacksonville.
